Event Details:

For runners and fastpackers, this weekend covers what you need to know to put you confidently in control of being out in the mountains.

You might be wanting to tackle longer days in the hills, thinking about entering your first ultra-running event and need to consolidate on preparation, skills and confidence or maybe you’d like to take a deeper dive into route planning to unlock new areas. Whatever your need, this will be an invaluable weekend for you.

A combination of indoor and outdoor sessions, we look at the fundamentals of mountain navigation, GPS devices, weather, and routes as well as how to prepare yourself for a demanding long event. There’ll be a night navigation exercise and a Sunday adventure putting skills into action, as well sessions on kit and food.

You’ll be out on the hills on both days- it’s a brilliant opportunity to deepen your knowledge and skills, work on your confidence, listen and share.

It’s an inclusive weekend with accommodation (options included) and two highly qualified tutors.

Who is this weekend for:

This weekend is for any runner who wants to take their running onto the trails and into the hills would like to improve their confidence in the mountains or who would perhaps like to aim for a long event. If you’d like to learn to navigate more confidently, feel more at ease with planning routes, understand the mountain environment more closely, know how to fuel yourself and feel less challenged by adversity – this is the weekend for you.

Do note, you choose the speed and level that you run at – this is NOT a competitive weekend but is about giving you the skills and know-how to operate more confidently.


Weekend Outline:

Friday:

  • Arrival from 4pm. Vegetarian & vegan meal provided Friday evening.

Saturday:

  • Maps and navigation – A dive into the world of cartography and how we can navigate the trails and mountains.
  • Hill Walk – Using our newly acquired skills, we will deploy some basic navigation techniques to go on a micro adventure in the Vale of Ewyas.
  • Talk on training, kit, fuelling your adventure and new ‘tech’ in running: GPS devices, watches, apps
  • Early Evening Navigation exercise
  • An evening meal at the oldest pub in Wales.

Sunday:

  • Weather, micro-nav vs macro-nav, route planning
  • Trail/Fell Run: we’re going on an adventure to consolidate what’s been covered over the weekend – don’t worry about speed – this is much more about focus and enjoyment.

Accommodation:

The weekend includes two nights’ accommodation in a bunkhouse (or there’s parking for campervans with full use of all facilities and hook-up). The bunkhouse has showers and a kitchen. It’s a nice tasteful space converted by The Landmark Trust.

We fully recognise that communal accommodation isn’t everyone’s preference, so we also have a list of nearby places to stay if you’d rather book your own accommodation. Just email us (Ruth@element-active.co.uk) and we’ll send it out.

Food:

We provide all food for the weekend except Saturday evening when we book a table at a local pub.

We cater vegetarian and vegan and believe in good quality, freshly prepared food. We will try to accommodate most dietary requirements which can be indicated on the booking form.


Your Tutors

Brett Mahoney:

FELL, TRAIL, ULTRA RUNNING AND CLIMBING:

Brett is a mountain/fell runner, rock climber and development officer for The Outdoor Partnership. He holds his Summer Mountain Leader (SML), Leader in Running Fitness and Rock Climbing Instructor (RCI). Brett is also a member of the Longtown (?) Mountain Rescue Team while being dad to two young children and a spaniel! He took up mountain running in 2016 after the birth of his first child, when time for hill walking was limited and has never looked back.

He’s achieved a top 20 finish in the XTERRA Snowdon Trail Marathon in 2022 and a top 10 finish in the Rab Helvellyn Sky Ultra in 2023.

Brett specialises in self-navigation mountain rounds and holds the current FKT (Fastest Known Time) for a winter South Wales Traverse (125km + 6,000m), winter Rownd Mynydd Du (Black Mountains Round – 117km + 5,500m) and the overall FKT for Black Mountains Circular (55km + 2,000m).

Bethan Logan:

FELL, TRAIL, SELF-NAVIGATION MULTI-DAY EVENTS AND CLIMBING

Bethan is a qualified Mountain Leader, Rock Climbing Instructor and Orienteering Coach.

She has been hooked on mountains since her first glimpse of the ‘real ones’ on a trip to Eryri as a scout! She has never looked back and now, with 14 years of experience leading others and living at the foot of the Black Mountains, she still incorporates plenty of mountain-time into her day-to-day life.

With a background in ‘have-a-go’ adventuring, with various long-distance walking and cycling trips around Europe under her belt, she now focuses on fell and mountain running and when not out in the woods trying to keep up with two whippets, can generally be found poring over a map planning the next run or adventure. 2019 gave her a win at the Saunders Lakeland Mountain Marathon, Holy Island SwimRun and the OMM. Returning to more solo events post-Covid, Bethan topped the podium at the Salomon Skyline Scotland 27k trail event and represented East Wales in the British inter-counties fell running championships.

We always personally acknowledge your booking. We then email further information about the weekend 2-3 weeks before you come. If you have any questions in the meantime please don’t hesitate to email us: ruth@element-active.co.uk

Cancellation:

If you have to drop out, we will refund you (minus a £50 administration fee + Stripe processing fees) if you cancel two months prior to the event. Anything after that date is non-refundable. We will happily accept a replacement if you find someone else to take your place.
