If you’d love to be more proficient with a map but feel under-confident, then this one-day course is for you. Expect to become empowered. Your map will change from your sworn enemy to your new best friend.  As a runner, unlocking the map will give you confidence to plan new routes, open up new terrain and joyously discover new places.

This one-day course is a mixture of indoor and outdoor sessions, with plenty of opportunity to put new skills into action in a relaxed and supportive environment.

What people have said:

My lack of confidence to venture out alone due to my lack of navigation skills has reduced me to tears of frustration and anxiety in the past. I left this day feeling like I can do this! I understand where I am and where I need to be. Honestly, this day has been life changing. Thank you. (Mandy).

It was a welcoming day. Brett and Bethan mixed up learning activities in a way that I have understood and remembered the information 😀: talking, games, practice with guidance, a chance to have a go alone and reflection/ consolidation at the end. A day course was a perfect length for the volume of information. (Jane)

I learnt so much about navigating. The 4 Ds were incredibly useful, and I’m still thrilled with my little ‘magic’ measuring card! Maps have taken on new meaning. The biggest credit goes to Beth and Brett. They got the balance spot on. No question was too silly, and they were supportive but challenging and made all the different exercises fun. I absolutely LOVED our exercise to find checks back to HQ independently despite not feeling confident. It was because Beth and Brett know their stuff so well that the exercise was perfectly pitched. Who is this day for:

This course is for any active person who’d like to become more confident with map reading, route planning and self-navigation. No expertise in map reading required – this is an introductory eventThe focus will be on navigating for running but speed is not important, and we often walk when learning new skills and will only jog the more runnable sections.

We will cover around 8-10km of terrain during the day, including some hills.

Can I come on my own? Absolutely and this is something we actively encourage. It’s sometimes hard to book on your own but you’ll have a very warm inclusive welcome if you do.

Course Outline:

Start time 9 am – finish by 4.30pm.

We will cover the basics of map reading and will get you outside to put these to use.

We will cover new navigation ‘tech’ including apps and watches.

There will be fun sessions enabling you to take responsibility for your navigation.

Please note, you set the pace that you work at – this is NOT a competitive day.

We provide teas, coffee and snacks throughout the day.
